When I think of the Democratic Party today, I think of my own backyard, not me necessarily but my State of Maryland. The Free State of Maryland as we are called and what Maryland-Democrats have been doing in this state since we won back complete control of it in 2006. The Governorship led by Governor Martin O’Malley and of course the State Assembly both House and Senate that we’ve controlled at least my whole lifetime. The Free State of Maryland is where Democrats should be politically, at least for Liberal-Democrats. Maryland is for Liberal-Democrats what New Hampshire is for Libertarians as well as Liberals but Conservative-Libertarians as well. Or what Vermont is for Progressive-Democrats and other Progressive-Socialists. And what South Carolina and Alabama is for the Christian-Right or Confederate-Republicans. Its our base and where we show the rest of our party and country how to lead and to govern.
Why do I say this because look at what Maryland has been doing under Democratic leadership. We just passed Gay marriage and legalize gambling including casinos. We just legalized medical marijuana and are about to decriminalize marijuana all together and next and you can bet on this. We will legalize marijuana all together which may happen in 2014 or later this year. We have the best public schools in the country including colleges. The future as well as present of the Democratic Party is a very Liberal party on social issues that believes in a high deal of personal freedom and not fans of the Nanny-State policies that come from Mike Bloomberg’s New York and other places. That individuals should have a high degree of freedom when it comes to their personal lives. And an economic-Liberal party thats about opportunity and expanding economic freedom for people who need it and don’t have it.
This is not your fathers or grandfathers Democratic Party of FDR and LBJ anymore. Those coalitions for the most part have died off, the George McGovern coalition that was born in the 1960s thanks to the Great Society and Vietnam War is still here. But they are no longer running the Democratic Party. Today we are in round two of the Bill Clinton era that is even more Liberal now on social issues but still has that same economic-Liberal message of opportunity, responsibility and freedom.
